Reset Your Shoulders in 60 Minutes

Phones, laptops, driving and desk work can all leave the neck, shoulders and upper back feeling tight, heavy and restricted. A big part of the problem is simply holding the same position for too long.
If your head sits forward, your shoulders stay slightly raised, or your arms are held in front of you for hours, the muscles around the neck and upper back have to keep working to support that position. Think of it like holding a tennis ball out on an extended arm for too long: eventually the muscles tire.
The further your head sits in front of your shoulders, the more work the muscles at the back of the neck and upper back have to do. Stress can add to it too, because many people unconsciously brace or lift their shoulders.
That can leave you with:
stiff or raised shoulders
aching between the shoulder blades
a heavy upper back
tightness when turning the head
tension travelling up towards the base of the skull
Where massage can help
If that’s where you’re carrying most of your tension, a targeted massage can often make more sense than a full-body treatment.
Instead of spreading an hour across the whole body, we can spend the session working through the neck, shoulders and upper back in much more detail.
Massage can help reduce the feeling of muscular tightness, calm overworked tissues and make movement feel easier and more comfortable.
A simple way to think about it is this: those muscles have been holding the brakes on all day. Massage gives them a chance to ease off. At Sensaté Massage, a targeted neck and shoulder treatment can focus on the trapezius, shoulder blades, upper back and neck, working through the areas that feel most restricted.
Many people finish feeling noticeably looser, lighter and more mobile.
Massage is only part of the answer
If the same posture is repeated every day, the tension can gradually return. That’s why I also recommend simple movement and strengthening exercises alongside massage. Regular screen breaks, changing position and gently moving the neck and shoulders can all help.
I’ll cover a few simple exercises in another post.
Sometimes you don’t need a full-body massage.
Sometimes your shoulders just need an hour of their own.
