THE BOB HOPE ROUTINE

2 min read

Bob Hope was one of the great entertainers of the 20th century, with a career spanning more than 70 years across stage, radio, film and television. He also lived to the remarkable age of 100.

One thing Hope was known for was taking care of himself. He stayed active, played golf, walked regularly and reportedly made massage a regular part of his routine.

Did massage make Bob Hope live to 100? Nobody can know that. But there is something sensible in the way he approached ageing: he looked after his body before problems became serious.

We already do this in other areas of life. We visit the dentist, have our eyes checked and try to stay reasonably active. Yet we often ignore the muscles carrying us through every day until they become stiff, tight or uncomfortable.

Massage can be part of that regular maintenance. It can help you relax, reduce muscular tension and soreness, and leave you feeling looser and more comfortable in your body.

Whether you go to the gym, garden, work physically, sit at a desk or simply want to keep moving well as you get older, looking after your muscles can help you keep doing the things you enjoy.

Most of us aren’t going to have massage as often as Bob Hope reportedly did. I usually suggest something more realistic: once a month if you can, or at least once a season.

Four massages a year gives you a regular opportunity to stop, reset and give your body some attention.

The lesson isn’t that massage is the secret to living to 100. It’s much simpler than that: Look after the body you grow old in.
